Greece's location on the Mediterranean gives it a temperate climate that stays fairly mild all year. Sea breezes along its thousands of miles of coastline make even a winter visit enjoyable, and only the highest mountains get lasting snow. The long summers are the finest time to visit, with sunny days, only the occasional heatwave or storm, and the widest choice of activities.
You'll probably enjoy the weather whenever you go, but some times of year are better than others, depending on what you want to do. Beach lovers will want to travel at a very specific time of year, while hikers and museum-goers have a much wider window.
The weather in Greece through the year
Geography plays a big part in the weather you'll get. Coastal destinations such as Athens, Crete and the Cyclades islands have the mildest weather, with wet winters and hot summer days that end in warm, breezy nights. Thessaly and Macedonia, in central and northern Greece, include some of the country's highest mountains and can have Alpine conditions in winter, sometimes with heavy snow.
Temperatures below are typical daytime highs and night-time lows, in °F with approximate °C.
January to March
These off-season months are still fairly mild in places such as Athens, Fira and Heraklion. Daytime highs are in the 50s °F (10–15 °C), with nights dropping into the 40s °F (4–9 °C). In the mountains, such as Mount Olympus and the Pindus range, temperatures are in the 20s °F (−7 to −2 °C).
Expect wet weather whatever the altitude, so bring an umbrella and enjoy the refreshingly cool air. It's a good time to visit indoor attractions, such as museums full of the treasures of ancient Greece.
April and May
The days start to hint at the warmth of summer, and flowers begin to bloom after the winter rain. Highs are in the 60s and 70s °F (16–26 °C), with lows in the 40s and 50s °F (4–15 °C) across most of Greece.
It's still chilly at night, but the weather is perfect for outdoor activities that might be too hot at the height of summer. If you want to hike along the rim of Santorini's caldera, this is an ideal time.
June to August
This is the peak travel season: schools are out for the summer and the beaches are at their best. Expect highs in the high 80s and 90s °F (about 30–37 °C) in Athens, the Cyclades, Crete and other coastal areas, with lows in the 60s °F (16–21 °C) across most of Greece. This is sunbathing weather, and the beaches fill with visitors soaking up the sunshine.
If you want to explore the slopes and peaks of Mount Olympus, now is the time, with daytime temperatures there in the 50s and 60s °F (10–21 °C).
September and October
Like April and May, these early autumn months still have wonderful weather but fewer crowds, which makes them some of the best months to visit Greece. Highs are in the 70s °F (21–26 °C), easing into the 60s °F (16–21 °C) by the end of October. Nights are mild, and only a few days a month bring significant rain.
November and December
The first hints of winter arrive, with daytime highs in the upper 50s and low 60s °F (about 13–17 °C) and sweater weather in the evenings, when lows fall into the 40s °F (4–9 °C). December is one of the wettest months of the year, so bring an umbrella and plan some indoor activities for rainy days.
The best time to visit Greece for the beach
Swim in the clear sea or stretch out on the sand of Greece's finest beaches in the warm summer months. June, July and August are prime sunbathing weather and the best time to work on your tan. If you're a keen scuba diver, the warm Mediterranean is home to a fascinating range of sea life.
The best time to visit Greece for a honeymoon
The best time for a honeymoon in Greece depends on the two of you, so ask yourselves a few questions before you start planning. Are you on a budget? Do you prefer culture or high-energy activities? Do you want plenty of time alone, or don't you mind crowds?
If you want to walk barefoot along the beach at sunset, you'll need to travel in the summer peak season. If you're more interested in exploring Greece's history, plan your trip for the quieter months and enjoy lower prices as a bonus.
You can find secluded spots to enjoy each other's company even at the height of summer, so don't let the crowds put you off if summer is when you want to go.
The best time to visit Greece with children
Families usually travel during the school holidays, and that's true all over Europe, so crowds always grow at Easter, in the summer and over the winter holidays. You may not be able to avoid the summer crowds in popular destinations like Athens or Santorini, but it's also the best time for the beach, and you're sure to make friends with other visiting families.
The best time to visit Greece on a budget
Making your money go further doesn't mean having less fun in Greece. Outside the summer months the beach is cooler, but the mild off-season weather is perfect for walking and museums, and you can still enjoy the sea views, although you may want a jacket for a stroll along the shore.
Try March or October for plenty of sunny days at much lower prices. If you travel in December or January, you'll also get to enjoy a Greek Christmas, though some less popular sights close for the winter. If there's something you've set your heart on seeing, check that it will be open out of season.
The best time to visit Greece for festivals
Greek culture is an infectious mix of delicious food and wine, colorful traditions and high spirits. Celebrate like the locals by seeking out music and food festivals whenever you visit. There's likely to be something going on even in the middle of winter, and spending a little time living as the Greeks do will make your trip much more meaningful.
Any major holiday is a chance to experience traditional Greek culture. Christmas, Epiphany, Easter and national holidays mostly fall in the quieter months, while food and music festivals fill the height of summer. If you're visiting a wine region such as Santorini, go in September to see the grape harvest, and enjoy the island's International Music Festival while you're there.
Skiathos hosts music and arts festivals at its striking Bourtzi Castle throughout the summer. If you love Greek food, don't miss the week-long food festival on Crete in early July, where local pomegranates, honey, olive oil and cheese are celebrated alongside Greek dancing and crafts.
The best time to visit Greece for hiking and skiing
The cooler temperatures of spring and autumn are perfect for hiking in Greece. They're also a good time to avoid the crowds and pay a little less for your accommodation, as everything costs more in the busy summer. Don't attempt to climb Mount Olympus in the cooler months unless you're an experienced climber, because the weather can change dramatically during the day.
If you love skiing, head for the slopes of Mount Parnassos, Mount Olympus, Pisoderi or Vasilitsa in winter for some excellent Alpine skiing.
Whenever you decide to travel, you'll find amazing sights, festivals and cultural experiences. Greece's long history as the birthplace of Western culture makes it an ideal destination for all kinds of travelers, from history lovers and art enthusiasts to wine and nature lovers. Soak up the sunshine, ski down a snowy slope, browse ancient treasures or taste handmade baklava, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
